Sir, I like what you say. I admire your wisdom and your patriotism.

Saying "No", as you suggest, may be appropriate. The implications of saying "No" may, however, resonate with previous events in Lexington and Concord.

Why do we submit? Because we are sheep. Bah... Bah...
Quote:
And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? After all, you knew ahead of time that those bluecaps were out at night for no good purpose. And you could be sure ahead of time that you'd be cracking the skull of a cutthroat. Or what about the Black Maria sitting out there on the street with one lonely chauffeur--what if it had been driven off or its tires spikes?

The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if... We didn't love freedom enough...

Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago (1973). Excerpt from Footnote 5, Chapter 1.

Why do most Americans submit to so many of these type of things?

1) If you request a trial "by your peers", the judge will decide What will be submitted as evidence and presented to the jury, all under U.S. Government control.

2) Even if very supporting evidence for you and damaging evidence for the U.S. Government is submitted, your Fellow Americans will Not Send A Message To The U.S. Government by deciding in your favor.

This is assuming you even get your Day in Court.

This just brings up another classic line of from the U.S. Treasury.

"In the History of the U.S Tax System, the U.S. Department of Treasury describes tax withholding.

This greatly eased the collection of the tax for both the taxpayer and the Bureau of Internal Revenue. However, it also greatly reduced the taxpayer's awareness of the amount of tax being collected, i.e. it reduced the transparency of the tax, which made it easier to raise taxes in the future."

What a line. Making it easier for the taxpayer.

Words of wisdom. And within Solzhenitsyn's words, both the definition of the problem as well as its solution.

But a sheep remains a sheep. One can describe calculus to it for a lifetime, and it will remain a sheep. And one can describe other things with similar effect.

Bah, Bah - truly.

If feasible and possible for the situation, why not consider amending the returns asking to apply tax refunds to 2009 if you owe for 2009? Then consider not paying any more unless needed. This could reduce any underpayment penalties since your payments are likely considered paid early.

Last year I had to pay just under the penalty threshold at the end of the year in taxes but so what? Planning for the future, seeing where I am as far as what I owe and saving back what I need is a frigging grown up thing to do...

"Oh but my wife (or husband or significant other or dog, cat, aunt Hilda or whatever) will spend it... bitch slap that relative and tell em to grow up... and while the opposite is NOT true, you can't steal from the State and Federal government without expecting a penalty or confiscation from it so this crap is important.

Deejunk:

All you're accomplishing with applying the refund to estimated tax payments is to give them an even longer interest-free loan of your money.

Observation: IANAL, but it would make sense to me that anyone who receives such an IOU would have standing to sue for stuff like fraud or breach of contract or some such in state court. How could the state defend itself against such a suit? Also, since the state court judge is also indirectly a party to the suit (being a state employee), would such a suit not automatically qualify for federal court? For fed law violations regarding fraudulent money, I expect that's a criminal matter so only the fed gov't could proceed along those lines. Anyone care to comment?

While that's true of the vast majority, a significant number of numerically literate people understand the math, but, not the implications of what in their own lives is at stake. And, here we need to cut them a little slack, because the MSM has helped them remain in denial, many are just now becoming aware that the government is captured and its policies are flawed. Unfortunately, way too many people are STILL listening to their brokers (it DID come back just enough to sucker retail back in). The percentage who have been making preparations for over a year is small. At least the percentage making preparations is growing.

What Waverider said is the most likely outcome. What did Washington's generation do to inspire the revolution differently than what we have done to date? What did the French do differently in their revolution? What does it take to motivate the masses to rise up against the status quo? Are we simply not suffering enough hardship in numbers to produce one yet?

A great many Americans simply fear Their Own Government; -That is why They do it.

The proper relationship of the Government to the People is that the Government functions as directed by the Citizenry to provide for the safety and maintenance of the common interests of the Citizenry.

This is no longer the relationship.

America has become a country where the People work for the support and maintenance of the Government Oligarchy & Bureaucracy.

It is the inversion of the basic concept of what Government IS that is at the root of the problem.

Failed Government should be reformed or removed & replaced.

Government Bureaucracies & Institutions are Mere Mechanisms To Support Human Endeavors -Not The Inverse; This is the fundamental concept at the root of Republican Government that the Populace has forgotten and which must be brought to attention post haste...

Peterm99,

Agreed. But it sure beats the possibility of getting no interest (or IOUs) and continuing to pay estimates for the current year or not paying estimates and having a penalty for 2009. Or paying in more than you actually owe and then the state going belly up.

I totally agree that it is illegal, and with as much unpunished lawlessness, we should also make the best of a bad situation. If a lawsuit comes from it, will we get punitive damages and interest from a bankrupt state? I don't know.

I would apply that tax and stop paying in. That way they CHOKE on a big sharp bone because you aren't paying anymore and they are forced to apply what they already have! It's a harder choke for them to get all new money cut off...

Thereby inexorably leading to higher prices, a smaller market for services, and ultimately fewer jobs. You will create the environment to get precisely the opposite of what you (allegedly) wish to accomplish.

But that was not the point I was attempting to get at... It seems many tend to use the "crisis" of the moment (National Security in 2007-08; unemployment in '09) to camouflage their xenophobia. This is not a new phenomenon - in the '30's, it was the Irish.

Just please be clear about what all this "illegal immigrant" angst is really about.

Swrichmond - I was in Western Maryland for hours at a "teaparty" holding a sign that had a picture of a crying bird on it and it said:

Cry Fowl! Free Bird. On the other side said "Unalienable Rights Hijacked" also with a crying bird. The sign stick was made with a huge fly swatter in order to take care of the flies attracted to the filth of our representatives (except our districts Mr. Bartlett of course - he says this **** being passed IS ****, so a big swatter is good)...

What about your sign?

Utabintarbo - Just about everyone above poverty level can afford landscaping in our perfect world? Maybe these are services that should be available to only the "kings and queens or near kings and queens." By the way, society's "kings and queens" do pay well. I'd interview for a job like that. We as US citizens are spoiled rotten.
