Great ticker, and agree with you all the way. However I think FNM must have made USD2.2b surely as their share price is up over 3.5pct? One of these must be wrong or oh my brain hurts. ---------- The point to carefully consider is whether any of the underlying problems that led to the crisis, most specifically excessive levels of debt and leverage, have actually been addressed rather than being hidden and papered over. KD I think that they will be proven right in their estimate of 2009 is going to be worse than 2008. FNM might just be tell us that it is going have the chance of lime light when the government takes over the agency. with banks tightening credit... can't you basically say that the rate cuts will not have an effect on the economy as would normally be the case.. normally the rate cuts are supposed to lower rates and stimulate borrowing and encourage banks to lend more money thus expanding the economy.. but with rates near historic lows and banks tightening credit, doesn't that kind of mean the economy is FUBAR'd? ---------- Ben is going to create an equity bubble from excess liquidity that tops at 1200... and bottoms at 300. There's no economic "expansion" folks. They use the "core" number for the deflator, more or less, which of course is bull**** - the money you spend on gas does count in the real economy! ---------- "The monetary base in ALL modern monetary systems is the sum of unencumbered assets against which one is both WILLING AND ABLE to borrow." - Me

'The bond and stock markets will both tank immediately if that becomes apparent, with the stock market being far worse' but but but...the man on nbr last night said all is well and he expects his Berkshire stock to be up 50 percent by the end of 2010 ! you mean he was lying to us ? say it aint so. he was wearing a suit he must know what he is talking about. hehe. I too am positioned for a fall but with the way the market has behaved lately who knows when or if it will even occur this year. ugh. ---------- If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity. Karl & others, the deflator can't be CPI directly, as it is used to correct Domestic product. Domestic. If you just take CPI, or the core for that matter, with all the import stuff in it, your GDP number gets screwed ever worse. Having said that, I don't make any claims about the deflator being realistic or not. I don't have the ability to calculate the "correct" value for the deflator to claim one way or the other. But I do know they can't use CPI. Now the big question regarding inflation is how badly and how soon will these insanely high oil prices affect other prices. Since just about everything is transported with trucks, and diesel prices are pretty much doubling y2y (give or take a little, I suppose), those transportation costs absolutely will start showing up in everything. And then we will see how much of a limpy dick that old fart Bernanke actually has become. And we should also see the deflator eventually showing up Big Single Digits.

Karl, was wondering about your thoughts on the Fed asking for an early ok to start paying interest to commercial banks on their reserves... http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=2.... Seems to me that's basically the same as lowering rates even more, but they can then publicly state they didn't. Also seems that this will give the banks more slosh, but does nothing but hasten the erosion of the Fed's balance sheet. Wouldn't it turn some of Bumnanke's remaining 'bullets' into blanks? Just seems like more circle-jerk Ponzi finance... Thanks! ---------- I love USA. Land of Free. Ooops I am not a bank. ****. - Mliu

This quote from Fannie Mae's CEO somehow reminds me of Chuck Prince, the music and the chairs: "We've got to get across a bridge where we don't miss the opportunities we have," Mudd said on Tuesday's call. "We will feast off this book of business we are putting on."
