Karl,

Wow! that is all I can say.

Quote:
We are running out of time and what I want for Christmas is for our government to show the citizens of this great nation that it is not the felon and the people who are the felons will be indicted, arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law - no matter who they are.

As I mentioned yesterday, government (meaning president, the 535 and all the top level people running the agencies) won't change until it is forced to. They are biologically incapable of changing before their own power and perogatives are threatened bc in their eyes if they change their position vis a vis the economy their power and perogatives will be threatened.

It is only when the benefits outweigh the costs that a politico will change their position. Until then, it just ain't gonna happen.

I can feel the tension of many people with these bailouts... What will be the breaking point is tax increases and job loss for many people. Tax increases and a few months of unemployment to a person will make them very angry at the government and its bailouts. People in these situations will start to wonder why rich well connected people got billions in bailouts but he cant even get $1000 this month to pay the bills.

Karl, thanks for the ticker . I live and work in NYC . People here talk about all that is going on BUT they are not at the point of recognition yet. They are, in their words not mine " Better eductated than the rest of the country, more progressive "meaning not as backwards" as the rest of the country. I on the other hand while calling for prosecution of these thieves still get the what are you smoking looks. They need a building to fall on them and I fear that then and only then will they wake up. Thanks for your efforts in faxes and letters to all Politicians to try to bring about change. REAL CHANGE!

Great Ticker Gen and a Merry Christmas to you and yours as well.

I would not be expecting your Christmas present anytime soon from the powers that be. They would all have to out themselves as well and I dont think that will occur.

Reminds me of the saying that "They would rather be right and dead then wrong and alive."

I'm in NYC and a good friend who works on WS completely sympathizes with everyone out there. He thinks the bailouts are terrible and I think at this point, if he lost his job (again - lost one last year already), he might not return to the street.

@stone & british - Most of my family still lives in NJ / PA and we're heading down again tomorrow... I'd have to say that a lot of people know something is wrong, but can't exactly put their finger on it. They know the path is unsustainable, politicians are complicit, but there's nothing they can do about it. Unfortunately I see this leading to more and more behavior as quoted in the Ticker. This built up frustration is eventually going to burst and look out when it does.

I used to work in the financial industry in NYC and you'd be surprised the number of Austrian economics fans there who are gritting their teeth everyday. Most have become disillusioned and have plans to eventually leave the area and industry all together.

Joe -

From what I see they know something's wrong but most still believe that this is temporary and we will be back to business as normal come 3Q next year.

I am constantly amazed at your well reasoned and prolific prose. Today however, I cringed when following the link provided and was presented with some anti-semitic tin-foil bs, spewing hate, professing 9-11 was staged, and that a plane did not in fact hit the Pentagon.

I "get it" that this re-enforces your point, but man I hate to see that tin-foil **** linked to from inside the cogent confines of TF.

Or worse Stone, I see many pinning every hope on Obama coming in and saving the day. The best he could do is get the gov't out of the way and let the people claim their country back. I think the pressure builds for at least a few months into his presidency. By 3Q next year it should get very interesting.

That's not what I'm hearing Stone. I'm hearing people are really truly and deeply scared. Not just about their jobs too. Another person pretty high up on WS (okay, very high up) is expecting 2009 to be just dreadful. The thing people outside of NYC have to remember is that while many here made more and more money, prices (thanks to credit) outpaced many of their gains and so much of their hard work was for naught (ie they live in the same house, it just COSTS more). Many on WS I know were really fed up BEFORE TSHTF in September!

Work in NYC here also. Live on Long Island. Word is they are looking to increase our LIIR fares as much as 75% next year, in a worst case scenario. That will make it cost prhibitive for many people right now to get back and forth to work. NYC is toast. I hate it here.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

Happy Holidays.

GUYs these people look down on me , I work in the service industry and one guy said to me last year when I said I bailed the markets and went to cash at 12,300 before the 14 area top " what do you know the EXPERTS I watch on bloomberg every day say we going to 15,000 they have degrees what do you do for a living ?" . This being the same guy I told to buy fdg at 20 and he sold at 39 cause I begged him too . Then I told him get back in going higher and he forgot neddless to say it ran to high 70's and then he said why did you tell me to sell? I told him I told you gave you chart with reentry and to get back in at entry. only told you to bail to avoid the corrective wave down . See the way I see it you MUST have a phd to get people to listen to you BECAUSE the sheep have been trained that way.

Gen,

Please insert a pre-emptive disclaimer into your piece above the reference to Hal Turner. Turner is a Grade-A Moonbat and in other posts on his homepage he claims "Obama is Osama" because of the shapes of their ears, and eggs on his white-supremacist sycophants by referring to Bernie Madoff (whose name he spells incorrectly) as a "filthy kike." We don't need this discussion to devolve into another slur-fest between anti-Semites and Israel-Firsters.

MayorQ -

What I hear is people ARE worried about their jobs but seem to believe that if they can make it into the middle of next year, things will be ok. I am generalizing. I know some folks on the street are particularly scared. But, at least, to me I keep hearing from people that the turnaround will happen in 3Q next year or no later than end of next year.

I tell them I hope they're right while being very certain that they're dead wrong...

The government has discovered that it can lie and cheat successfully.

For starters the unemployment numbers can and are skewed. Skew the numbers a little more and people will think it's bad and not riot. Say the real unemployment numbers are 26% some time in the future. The government can report 9.5%. People will believe it because those in business use it as a fact.

The government has been falsifying GDP as well. Skewing important statistics as facts can powerful. The only time people will take action is when their ability to survive is affected. So the lies and deception can continue for a while.

I think the breaking point will come when people realize that Obama's words of change were nothing but empty promises and that his sole intention is to preserve the status quo. More hiding the salami and looting of public funds.

Perhaps I'm reading him wrong but that's exactly what his cabinet choices are suggesting.

All imaginable citizen reactions to the government helping with or just knowingly allowing fraud are bad:

-"I'll take the law into my own hands"

I am pretty average and I can say that I fear our current representatives and officials in government are either 1) uneducated as to current events or 2) ignoring general trends.

I believe honesty and integrity are necessary for a capitalistic system to operate otherwise you have aristocracy at the reigns. That is not what our country is about.
