C'mon, Karl, don't beat around the bush. Tell Mr. Jaibo how you REALLY feel. . .

Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire.

I worry that war is the more likely outcome following a U.S. default. We would like to think that the Chinese citizens would turn their pitchforks toward their own government (as is right). But don't count out the possibility that the propaganda machine, as it always does, may whip up some nationalistic frenzy and convince the Chinese that they have been wronged.

Besides, war could be good for the political leaders on both sides if it can distract their respective populations from the economic crimes that they have committed.

Oh come on, there'll not be any war with China, any more than there was war with the USSR. No one can invade nations of 300+ million and keep their supply lines going, and to toss a few ICBMs into a nation that owes you a big monetary debt simply ensures that you'll never get paid esp. once you destroy its productive capacity.

There may be a stepped-up economic war, but nothing else. Talk of war with China is laughable.

Brilliant. I am so tired of hearing about the BRIC miracle. What a bunch of BS. Just like WCOM. They didn't reinvent the wheel. READ: they are lying. The costs are hidden. I get livid about this. We have been sold out. I don't want to live in Brazil. I say throw up the gate for everything except oil and rare metals. All the profit growth since 92 has been due to cramming the rank and file. CEOs and the Walton family has made enough money.

Fed wants to force rest of world to copy China's example and buy dollar debt to keep dollar from falling.

Might work for a few years, math probably catches up with the next administration.

Exactly. Uncle Sam wins a last man standing contest. We still have a ton of oil and lots of human and other capital.

i was just thinking how the chinese might be able to extract themselves with the least damage is to cause a liquidity crisis themselves, which would create a flight into treasuries, and sell as much as they could into the spike..

Tesla, I hope that you're right about China as you certainly are (given historical hindsight) about the USSR. There was this little quarrel though that we call World War II that I think directly followed from the economic depression of the prior decade. And a conclusion still popular today is that war spending brought us out of depression. Translation: war is good for the economy.

I don't know what kind of calculation could go into the decision for war. But I don't see why it must be on a total level. Why talk of invasion or ICBMs? We're talking about seizing resources and distracting domestic populations from their economic troubles by engaging them in grand nationalistic struggles.

I believe that the problem in the USSR was (though I'm no scholar on this, so I would welcome correction) that its population was disillusioned. They may not have been susceptible to nationalist sentiments. Is China susceptible? I don't know. Is the United States? Based upon how many people still seem look to the federal government for salvation, I fear that we are.

"throw up the gate for everything except oil and rare metals"

After you have thrown up the gate, you'll have difficulties getting those rare metals and oil, even if you keep that particular door wide open.

You have to assure your counterparty that those items will actually be paid for with something that's worth it, unlike last time when it was all promises and hot air.

Sorry for the random scattering posts. But you have struck a chord man. Maybe this is the plan. We can only hope.

On a related note, we can do this with the Chinese or any other manufacturing nation. On the flip side, we have to make good with OPEC. That's my reading. Your thoughts.

I've been watching CCTV 5 lately through TVU on my iPhone. It's the sports channel in China. I would say it's the Chinese sports channel, except that they show a fair amount of our basketball and Europe's soccer matches. They're very excited about Vancouver in 2010. I wonder how much they'll cheat this time. Anyway, there are lots of commericals for razors and electronics, and I can't tell the difference between their graphics and the ones on NBC and ESPN. Point being, people are people everywhere. They like having things, and they like competition. The seeds of free markets are everywhere. Even there. Even here.

I'd predict that when they see they are screwed they will say - "Well why are we still being polite about Taiwan?"
And they will take it.
Second less likely way to punish us would be to use N. Korea. It doesn't have the satisfaction of giving them something they want.
The supply line runs the other way against us and my guess is if Obama is told to keep his carriers away or they will be sunk he'll thank them for letting him know instead of just up and doing it. It would look bad to lose a couple carriers on his watch, and he doesn't have the balls to trade nukes with them even 20 to 1.
