A few points Gen: 1) How can we get away from running up huge amounts of debt, when our tax system favors the accumulation of debt over equity? 2) China, I think, will fare better than the United States because of the huge reserves that they have to play with. They can spend on consumption and infrastructure, etc. without any inflationary effects, because they actually have money. I think that at the end of this shake out we may have China rise from the ashes as a very major player on the world stage. Last modified:

1. You can only run up debt that can be financed by actual future production growth. Beyond that it always winds up creating a bubble. Limiting leverage limits the damage from such bubbles. You must insure that the leverage limits exist, are reasonable (e.g. 12:1) and are ENFORCED with no loopholes to avoid systemic damage. 2. China will get creamed; they are a nation of peasants, in the main. I wish them luck - they're going to need it. ---------- I used to play flute; I wonder if I can play a fife? Couple of things. Steph has a job? Does she ever sleep? And Gen for the FBI? You kidding me. CIA baby, Gen ain't answering to anybody. Just order a couple of assassins out to do what the current administration won't. I think Obs and Mtgspy would fit the bill. And for WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY who could we get except for HEDGIE. 1) I think what I was getting at is that the tax code should be amended to ameliorate some of the favor given to accumulating debt. This might help the situation. 2) Perhaps, but those peasants are the people financing our debt, and they very clearly, as a nation, have a great deal of money to throw around. They have huge surpluses and reserves, I don't see how they fare worse than us (huge deficits debt, insolvency). 2008-11-13 09:36:03

Gen, Another great ticker. I'm pretty sure I speak for many here when I say that when I read your tickers in the morning it's like a breath of fresh air. Pure TRUTH on an LCD. However, I have little hope left of Obama conforming to your list. For politicians this is like Russian Roulette when they can see that the bullet is in the next chamber. They just won't pull the trigger. I know they should and I know you'll say they have to (or ELSE) but I just don't think they can. Remember the days when banks were limited on how much interest they could charge on credit cards and loans? Now there are some cards that charge 39% interest, then late fees, then over the limit fees. That's how a lot of people have run up so much debt. I'd like to go back to limiting the banks on how much they could charge customers.

"You will send up a bill that enacts a full repeal Gramm-Leach-Bliley." What are the chances that he will do that considering he asked Leach to represent him with Albright at the G20? Can anyone think of how this was a smart move on Obama's part? Shouldn't Leach be one of the ones being called out? 2008-11-13 09:53:04

Another excellent Ticker, sir. You are a really good writer. Thanks for all you do. A true patriot. I'm willing to extend the benefit of doubt to Mr. Obama, but must say his early appointees/advisors don't give me much hope for anything good here. They are truly the worst of the worst - e.g., Biden, Rahm E., Maddy A., etc. Probably deluding myself to even hope for improvement - realistically, we have jumped from the frying pan into the fire with this erection. ---------- "Panics do not destroy capital; they merely reveal the extent to which it has been previously destroyed by its betrayal into hopelessly unproductive works" John Mills 2008-11-13 10:17:40

Very good piece by Kevin Depew. Funding bailouts could literally kill us: "But you and I already know how this story ends. The right thing will not be done. There will be more bailouts. And then more bailouts. Meanwhile, even as we continue writing checks to failed businesses, once-healthy businesses are facing doom, victimized by zombie companies absorbing dollars that, if freely spent, would be rightly theirs. USA Today this morning ran a piece on Crestor, an expensive drug that when given to those with normal cholesterol resulted in 54% fewer heart attacks and 48% fewer strokes. Unfortunately, using Crestor in healthy people to save lives would add $10 billion to the nation's healthcare bill." http://www.minyanville.com/articles/AXP-.... 2008-11-13 10:18:12
