After watching Obama last night, I have absolutely no faith he will do the right thing.

From what I have heard of him, I don't think he has a clue what has happened, or is going on, from a UK perspective I would have thought the blame must be with the poor choice of advisors he has surrounded himself with, but surely Volker knows what is going to happen?

The rumor running around multiple circles is that Volker has been marginalized and effectively forced out of policymaking by Summers and others (most particularly Summers.)

Summers is one of the chief architects of this mess from years ago; he's one of the "deregulationists" who in fact made a lot of this fraud possible.

Watching the speech last night was like watching an oncoming trainwreck. Every sentence he completed took us one notch lower into hell.

I wont' even begin to think of how the markets will react today and tomorrow. There could very well be a big rally, there could very well be a "that's IT?" collapse. Who knows. Long term though, these plans are going to be very destructive to our nation.

Well if Volcker still has his marbles he should resign immediately and make his case to the public as to why

After they have completely and utterly destroyed our economic system they will then beg Volcker to come back and repair the damage (or totally rebuild which is more likely).

What's the point of protecting shareholders? I get geithner's plan:
1) bid up assets using hf money
2) use their bid to "mark to model" and issue new shares to recap banks. I guess this is why you protect common shareholder?

Thing is, everyone knows it's a fraud.

Summers is hardly change you can believe in. he's soooo connected (as are 99% of Obama's minions) it is scary. its obvious that he will do everything he can to keep the Wall Street con game alive.

I am trying to come up with a reason for why Summers insists on delivering a KO after having won the first round with two canvas jobs to the economy.

He will forever be known as the idiot who fixed the leaking ship by making the hole bigger.

Yes, and apparently redeeming himself is off the table. I guess there was a miniscule chance he and Geithner would do that, albeit it being equal in chance to unicorns showing up in Washington.

Two things yesterday really bug the tar out of me.

1. Hearing about a crummy Treasury auction that was bailed by an anonymous buyer.
2. Obama's Mel Tillis impersonation last night. No confidence.

Late February and early March look like ground zero to me. Just my $.02.

Karl . . . I am relatively new to the Ticker and thankful that I found your writing and the community . . . I want to throw something out to you as a possibility..... Have you ever considered sending your tickers (in particular todays) to Matt Drudge.... Something tells me he might post them . . . To me that would be the fastest way to get this information out to a fair chunk of our population. Just a thought

There is no clean way to email them to Drudge that I'm aware of.

Some things posted there have shown up in the past - I presume he reads the Ticker.... but I don't know.

To me the Stimu-crap bill is not even the biggest issue. Sure, it's a piece of pork laden crap that won't do ****. But it's the other issues Gen brings up that really ****es me off. Geithner, The TALF games, no indictments, etc. etc.

In several conversations I had in the last few days it's clear that the only thing people are talking about is the stimulus bill (which is what is getting the airtime on the news). Virtually no J6P knows anything about the TALF or what they're proposing or what it means.

Dead on.

You can tell Pelosi and Reid are pulling the strings - just look at the fact that the Pres used a teleprompter. What's up wit dat!

Off teleprompter, he was a string of mumbled and disjointed cliches and lies.

When the right course of action 'for the majority' is resisted by those who are elected 'by the majority' it is clear that the system has been co-opted.

By whom?

#1, list all the constituent parts of the financial problem

#2, look at the ones NOT being discussed publically (e.g., being hushed up) Karl listed them.

#3, who owns #2 (and is trying to revive the value of #2 with these bailouts)

Gawd only knows the virulence of the miasma at the center of this money-grab.

- The #2 holders like drinking from the Aorta of bailout money and won't stop. Duh! They're paying bonuses with it! We'll eventually learn that the payouts get much more sordid than that!!!

- The media will obfuscate in the name of balance reporting.

- 'Joe sixpack, the gun-owner' can't be inconvenienced with logic and will not awaken.

What sickens me most is we have essentially the same cast of characters that got us in to this mess in the first place still largely at the wheel of power. And while average Joe's lose their jobs the "connected", incompetent, financial criminals get front row seats AGAIN to **** us out of our money in ways that twist the concept of fairness as perversely as anything I've witnessed.

The President says if we don't enact HIS remedies we burn for sure. Then, in the same breath, he claims that HIS remedies might also not work, but it's the only choice we have, HIS way or the way to ruin. So even if we crash under his plan he will come back and tell us that at least we tried the COURAGEOUS path and lost, which beat doing nothing (conveniently ignoring, of course, that there was a lot more substantive than noting out there as an alternative to HIS one way or the highway nonsense).

This country is on the edge of a cliff right now. We're running out of time to get it right. If this plan flies I think we go over the cliff and good. I hope the prescriptions in this Ticker catch the ear of people in high places. If not, God help us all.
