This is more evidence of a corrupt government and a country in decline. From the fraud and corruption in financial markets, voting fraud and loss of other freedom, the U. S. is looking more and more like the Roman Empire just before it collapsed. ------------------------------------------------- A trillion here, a trillion there and pretty soon you're talking about real money ************************************* Anyone who believes exponential growth can go on forever in a finite world is either a madman or an economist. - Kenneth Boulding, economist 2009-11-05 10:59:55

Necessity my @ss! These are the same types of people who got whipped up into a self righteous froth when Gov Sanford went AWOL. As if the sky would fall because they weren't around to DO SOMETHING. "He abandoned us!" Have separation anxiety much? If you are not present at the time a vote takes place, then your vote is by default NO. That would put an end to a significant portion of this nonsense. Perhaps the REPUBLIC may even have lasted a bit longer. If Patriot Act should apply to anybody, it's these people. Maybe the fact that the legislators have so much going on in the chambers - so much that they can't eat meals or go to the bathroom - should be a wake up call to them, or the citizens of Texas at minimum. THE REASON THAT THESE FOLKS ARE SO HARRIED AND OVERWORKED IS THAT THEY ARE PASSING TOO DAMN MANY LAWS AND POKING THEIR NOSES INTO TOO MANY THINGS! This just illustrates a companion idiocy to the stupid idea that today's issues and legislation are too complex and arcane for the average citizen to understand. If an ordinary citizen can't understand it, it should be simplified, or left the hell alone! ---------- "Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats." Sickening. This country is too far gone to have reformation of all of these things in the usual manner. The only way the bezzle and other wrongs are righted is through a barrel. That is just an unfortunate reality. Evil is good and good is evil. Seems biblical somehow. 2009-11-05 11:43:50

Come on, people. Laws don't apply to lawmakers or anyone associated with them. Haven't we learned that yet?

I just had an interesting discussion with an individual at my state rep's office about this and what I got from the 27 minute conversation was that they are "working on solutions" but there are no easy answers. I was also told that it is against the rules to vote for someone else BUT there is an exemption to give permission to someone to vote for you. She didn't have an answer when I said how do you know if someone is NOT voting the way the rep wants? A highlight of the call: The rep's office: "the system in TX is designed to fail, which is why the voting time is so short during session and ghost voting is necessary. We want limited government." I countered with, "if the system is designed to fail, then not having enough members on the floor to make a quorum works fine. The vote can't take place and that limits government." Rep's office: "But the reps are so busy with other committee meetings they can tell someone how they want to vote." Me: "If the vote is that important, they can make time to get to the chamber and vote themselves." Rep's Office: "You don't understand how legislation works." 2009-11-05 12:16:36

I understand how pitchforks work. Does this rep understand that according to The Constitution each citizen is supposed to be guaranteed a representative republican form of government, and that eventually failure to abide the Constitution can (and might, at some indeterminate point in the future) lead to learning (the hard way) how pitchforks operate? ---------- I used to play flute; I wonder if I can play a fife? Realist, Actually, the comparison would be to the beginning of the Roman empire (fall of the Republic/rise of Caesar), not the end of the western empire. Yah, let's hope Obama isn't going to found the first American principate. 2009-11-05 12:25:58

Gen: It was a painful conversation that ran in circles. The lady that told me I don't understand legislation transferred me to another person in the office who essentially said the same thing. From their point of view what they are doing is OK. They failed to appreciate that the reason the system is so screwed up is because there are too many laws making the system too complicated. Their whole mindset is to fix what doesn't work with another bill, adding another layer to the bureaucracy. The entire call was
