I agree 100% with everything you said. However, this is not a partisan problem. Rest assured McCain won't address any of this in his speech either.

800 Billion Dollar Deficit

I used to be a talented chemist until they moved an Indian PHD into the next hood and paid him 30K. Nice guy but he didn't know his ass from his elbow. I quit soon after that and changed careers. 4 years later the place was bought by a multinational company and then shut down.

I have ideas for some new monomers but there is nowhere left in the USA to develop them.

This week has been a pep rally for the Democrats. Rah, Rah, Rah. Vote for us.

Next week we get a pep rally for the Republicans. Rah, Rah, Rah. Vote for us.

No one addresses the real issues because they don't want to scare away any possible voters.

Last night's speech came off as typical Democratic/bureaucratic boilerplate. Anyone long enough in the tooth has heard it all before.

How the hell can all the largess be paid for? Does he realized the financial mess we find ourselves in? Happy talk isn't what America needs now. What it needs is a forceful Dutch Uncle, not an apologist for essentially a New Deal redux.

I will give him one thing, though, at least he pulled no punches regarding his tax and spend, quasi-socialist desires. He's no stealth candidate.

In my mind this election is shaping up to be one between two Democrats, one very liberal and one (McCain) somewhat conservative, say a Scoop Jackson style conservative Democrat. Both, for all intents and purposes, are in the hip pocket of the pigmen. Pick your poison.

"It is technological innovation that drives GDP growth, in the end. Take a look at history, and that is what you will find. Trains, then automobiles, telephones, mechanical refrigeration, etc. Each technological innovation has resulted in major steps forward in GDP and the common weal of the world."

Excellent points. And if only the Health care and Entertainment sectors could carry the water for our economy until then :-P

Wisc,

Did you mean socialist desires like having parents turn off the TV and start raising their kids, developing nuclear power along with alternative energy plants and having fuel effiecient cars build here in the US and not China?

That's part of what I heard.

I have on illusions about BHO saving us all, or the fact the fact that WE.DON'T.HAVE.THE.MONEY, but at least he has acknowledged SOME of the problems, and to me that's a start.

Remember, McCain wishes interest rates were at 0%.

I don't think Obama understands the financial problems we are facing. Presidents are figureheads. They can't be experts in everything. We have to wait until the problem hits him over the head to see how he deals with it. I don't see the other side talking about it, and I don't have much faith they'll change the current destructive behaviors.

Loose cannon is the idea here. Hopefully, if he really is a populist, he won't look kindly upon the shennanigans going on and will do something about them. Remember the current administration is very pro business to the point they've let business get away with blatant and pervasive fraud. It seems to me the SEC is being TOLD to back off since absolutely nothing is being done about it. If it's that bad Obama will get in there and the reaction will be, "What? This is blatant fraud. How did these guys get away with this for 4 years. No, this stops here, and now".

Hopefully fraud can be found (it's such a bull**** legal definition you can pin it on anyone, anytime) in situations where the management of a company looted it (with bonuses) before it flushed and recover those dollars.

Where was the enforcement under the Clinton's 8 years ? Where's the slamming of the till under the Democrat-led Congress since 2006 ? Hell, it was Bush's administration that prosecuted Enron.

IMO this is not a partisan issue - both parties are complicit in stealing the most bucks from the average citizen for as long as possible, until reality cannot be denied or put off any longer.

As for the Democratic Convention: it's rhetorical glossy snap-shots, and high-powered hand-shakes.
They're just a bunch of squirrels running around collecting nuts for the Winter--hoping that their agenda will take precedence when their constituent is elected. Not too deep--kind of like kissing on the first date.

I am not making light, your appeals have merit-but the place for that kind of debate is--just that in a real debate, and even that has been hyjacked by the main stream, corporate media. If you recall--it was The League of Women Voters who formalized the presidential debates-- and if you read up on the internet, you will see how they very begrudgingly withdrew from that forum- due to the displacement by the corporate agenda!

So, in terms of the issues, Americans are starved for open debate, real dialogue, and options that are aligned with the American People. As has been addressed on the Forum-- Re-instituting the Glass-Steagall Act! Fast forward the clock! We can't allow for the unwind to occur without the necessary vehicle by which there would be definitive separation of Bankers with Wall Street. Basically--it's non-negotiable that this answer to our financial situation will occur-only and unless these entities are SEPARATED!
This fact is not different to how we have checks and balances within our government--separating Church and State, Judiciary from Executive, et al.

I am not a historian, but it is interesting to note that Glass-Steagall was not enacted until 1933--AFTER the major downfall of the economy. I not only find this fascinating, but I reference this as a view into the minds of supposedly informed leaders, who were incapable of acting only till after the fact.

Thank you KD for the Ticker Forum!!! It's so nice to rise & shine, with coffee, and the TF! ~Z

In this post, following a discussion of Democratic Party policies, Karl wrote:

"Finally, let's talk about American Inventiveness. What was the last 'big innovation' to come out of America in terms of technology? There hasn't been one in over ten years."

This innovation from MIT researchers, announced in late July 2008, has the potential to be a bona fide 'big innovation.' However, we're still some years away from verifying that it is practical, and if successful, of seeing exactly how big its ripple effects will be:

http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2008/oxyge....

Although the press release hypes the application of this discovery in terms of storing solar-generated energy, the discovery is different and broader: it's a way of using electricity to split ordinary water into hydrogen and oxygen, at room temperature, by means of commonly available and relatively cheap catalysts.

Aronr - great minds think alike!

Karl said - “Finally, let's talk about American Inventiveness. What was the last "big innovation" to come out of America in terms of technology?

There hasn't been one in over ten years.”

There have been lots of them. Here is one that is extremely exciting as it provides a cheap way to split water into hydrogen and oxygen which will lead to decentralized power;

Excerpt;

Breakthrough catalyst for splitting water

31 July 2008

US scientists say they have solved a fundamental problem hampering renewable energy generation - how to split water cheaply into oxygen and hydrogen, under benign conditions, so that the gases can be stored as fuels.

Commercial catalysts for splitting water by electrolysis already exist, and the electricity they use can be renewable if it is generated by solar panels. But they come at a price. The cost of platinum, the most widely used catalyst, is currently around US $2,000 per troy ounce. Chemists have designed alternative catalysts, based on the complexes plants use in photosynthesis (where sunlight is harnessed to break water apart), but these are relatively inefficient.

Now a team led by Daniel Nocera, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has found a catalyst that uses cheap, abundant metals - cobalt and phosphorus - and works at an environmentally friendly neutral pH to release oxygen from water.1 Nocera says the system is not only far cheaper than platinum, but also an improvement on photosynthetic complexes in plants: 'We'll go beyond photosynthesis, because this catalyst you can just make in a glass of water.'”

Technology, properly directed by rational altruistic leaders, could replace oil as our primary energy source within ten years and allow us the freedom of decentralized power. Your roof could be your energy source, with energy, minus the cost of equipment, FREE as in FREEDOM, as in without control. What technology has done for communications needs with the creation of the internet, technology, properly focused, could do again for energy needs.

Problem: Corrupt government, heavily owned by big oil, and now focused on centralized control of the population through motivation by fear, do not want it.

Solution: Massive Election boycott 08!

the poor and money from the rich while promising
to protect each from the other."

Although I had a similar reaction to yours in watching the Obamination on the tube, there is nothing new here. It has all been marching along longer than I've been alive (a tad over 1/2 a century) and my own sundry attempts at redress of grievance for failure to adhere to the letter and spirit of the original documents (DOI, CONST/BOR) have led me to the place so adroitly described by George Carlin (RIP) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u6lCBnRo....

McCain, too? Biden?

Do they answer you with form letters, or try to answer personally and intelligently?
Do they answer you at all?

If they answer to you, what kind of letter is most effective at getting a personal answer?

I am seriously curious about who responds, and how, and many people on this forum have worthwhile things to say to these politicians. It is discouraging if you do not even know if you are "getting through".

I suggest, if more than just a few of us are sending out letters as well as your petitions, that we develop some kind of feedback-dedicated "home topic" to help us learn what is most effective. We could improve our "technique" of personal lobbying. All gov't correspondence is NOT confidential or copyrighted unless so marked, right? We could publish good and bad responses here, and reviews of the responses, for example, as incentive for politicians to become aware of what people think of them. Not to mention having them know that tens of thousands of people are reading those responses! We can develop and use "advertising technology" to improve politicians' awareness of our existence and our seriousness. A better use of effective copy writing than fleecing gullible retirees of their pensions, no?!

Thanks,
Steve Eberbach

Karl, agreed. BUT, the campaign issues must be limited to those that the ordinary voter can understand. Promising to go after the perpetrators of this fraud would quickly be re-framed as some sort of "elitist witchhunt". To get the average voter's attention, the message has to fit on a bumper sticker.

"Never give up" is good.
I'll try, too.
By advertising directly to DNC, Obama, McCain, Senators, Lobbyists, etc., that is.
If it does not work, little is lost.
If it does work, it is really "innovation"!

On innovation topic, besides storing energy, simply converting and transmitting it cheaply, flexibly, and efficiently is the key. Natural gas lately has proven this, even with its limited availability. Nikola Tesla's innovations of alternating current and transformers are still used today. Hard to beat, unless we get high temperature superconductors.

We need "open source", Generally Publicly Licensed versions of new kinds of high efficiency "energy transformers" whose basic enabling technology patents are used to PREVENT monopoly and encourage derivative works (children) of MANY KINDS by smaller-entity innovators to rekindle the old reputation of America as a Land Of Opportunity.
