Karl, on tonights video you were "train of thought" talking as you pondered the Qualcomm puts. Can you do that more often. That's great insight into how you think. Very educational. When you said 26.... I was going, damn! There's a gap there down to 24.88. That looks juicier than you're saying.

I'm so depressed about outsourcing I called the suicide hotline and got a call center in Pakistan. They got all excited and asked me if I could drive a truck.

Maple: I'm begining to doubt that. Particularly with financial companies. I think some earnings are being computed and only the absolute value being published. Maybe they'll do the same for stocks!

Wouldn't that make accounting fun? I have -$100 on my balance sheet and I owe you half. -$100/2 = $-50. You owe me $50 you deadbeat!

Yes, I'm conviently ignoring that +50 answer. :)

It sure is getting weird, Asi. Your example sounds a lot like a collection call I made yesterday.

etz: that the FDIC hasn't closed them already tells you how far behind the system really is with these zombies. If a bank is low on capital, you tell management to find investor money by next week or the bank will be put into runoff. end of story. or at least that would be the story in my parallel universe where logic is used.

This reminds me of when Levitt (a homebuilder and BBX spin-off that I owned from the spin-off) pulled this crap in 2005. Their CEO came on CNBS in August and touted the company as recession-proof, and then they bombed their earnings a little over a month later. I caught the earnings (loss) release at 10 PM right before I went to bed, and I then put in a market sell order for them and BBX. Levitt never traded at what I sold them at ($26/share) again.

Berk, more than 100 of my peers lost their jobs today. These were mostly engineers and research scientists. This has been happenning for the last several months.

At what point does the social and political damage become more expensive than sustaining the zombies? I could be wrong but at the current rate the little wheels won't hold for much longer.

Here's what Chris Whalen had to say today,
Quote:
The go slow approach to dealing with the zombies is not much help for the real economy, which is represented by real assets on the books of real banks, many of which have stopped lending. The policy of extend and pretend followed by elected officials "trickles down" from Barack Obama to your governor and mayor, delaying the necessary adjustment to the US financial system and increasing the financial and social cost of the cleanup. This cost is especially acute as it effects small business because contracted credit markets discriminate based on size above all.

One reason that the body count is not higher is that local politicians and regulators are resisting calls to restructure dead banks. They rightly fear that jobs and financing will never return to local communities once these charters and branches are lost.

Umm. I seem to remember a reporting convention that you're not supposed to state losses on a per diluted share basis as it makes your earnings look less bad, as the loss is spread over a greater number of shares.

Wasn't hard at all, and neither was having the installers do a very nice - and careful - job.

Funny how not being busy changes attitudes.
