If nothing else, it might be an effective measure at curbing short interest temporarily.

"After all, if the conversion price of that preferred ends up tied to the common's price, I can easily see where Geithner could simply utter the word "nationalization" on national TV, crash the equity price, then force conversion and wind up owning the whole bank."

Umm, I don't understand. If they want to nationalise, what is the point of pumping up the stock price first?

Looks like the common will be severly diluted. The Government wants to give the impression that they won't let Citi fail. But that could all change by next week!

And you have to assume citi is putting their best possible scenario forward at this time. Get the govt to plunk even more money down, on common, so the idiots in washington have an even bigger liability on the PoS.

When are those stupid ****ers in washington going to say citi failed and move on. it's not that hard. really!!

You are all missing the clear logic of this brilliant move. Citi has a market cap of $10B. US Taxpayers already own $45B of preferred. We now have the once in a lifetime deal of converting that $45B into common equity and winding up with a 40% stake in a $10B enterprise. How much BETTER can it get?

KD, with all due respect.......another day, another blow up in the good old USA and the reverberations are felt around the world.

When the hell will all this crap stop?

Maybe it's time the rest of the world said.......ENOUGH !!!!!

When do we get a new world currency so that the nations of the world can get on with life.

The USA has had it's time.......

Welcome back to being a just another nation in the world.

Super powers come and go as history proves.

Sorry for the rant, but like many others.....I'm just feed up with the crap coming out of a once great nation...... The United States of America.

"The manipulation, game-playing and outrageous activity bordering on an a flat-out scam perpetrated by our government continues."

And the pattern of market manipulation has become only too familiar: start a rumor Sunday night to pump the market for Monday when technical levels broke down last Friday.

Luvs, it stops when the people across the world cut the crap.

I see no evidence that is going to happen any time soon.

What will happen to BAC in the short term if this is true? What happened to all the talk of the end of ad hoc fixes and the beginning of comprehensive ones? I don't presume to understand all of this but it does not seem like things have changed much.

It IS change, copper pennies for dollar bills! What did you think the President from corrupt Chicago meant all that talk about transparency, honesty and integrity? Obviously, he meant for us to be honest, transparent and willingly pay our taxes to the IRS, but, as for government adhering to those traits in its interactions with us, not so much. /sarcasm off
