How in the name of God can the economy be increasing it's GDP while bellweather stocks such as CAT can be sucking air like a fish out of water????

Obviously, this dissonance in what is happening in D.C. and what is happening in the real world can't continue.

My head is spinning at just what a fraud this nation has become.

GDP includes government spending. If there's a ****load of government spending, GDP looks good, no matter whether the other GDP components are . QED.

Unfortunately, while the fraud continues, I'm burning theta. We've seen the playbook - they will pump this up in the futures, until they don't want to pump it any more. Then they'll take it down, again in the futures.

I've grown to accept the fact that I can't catch the corner. When this reverses, I'll wait until I've missed the first 10%, and then play along with the rest of the decline. Don't need to catch the top, so I'm done burning theta while the fraud persists.

The number of remaining quarters of GDP support through .gov spending has to be in the very low single digits, IMO.

So, we can officially move CAT onto "Co-opted" List.

Caged Pump Monkeys ... Slaves to Their True Masters.

Are there words beyond Surreal, etc. that can capture where we are? Does DC/WS really think that merely pumping the S&P through all means available passes for a real economy and a real policy. It definitely appears that way.

I think if people really understood what's happening, we'd have an all-out panic. Is that what we really want? Isn't it better that the gov't and media are applying a lot of sunshine and rainbows to the news so people get up and go to work every day?

Yes, they're putting lipstick on the bear and telling everyone that makes it a bull. Yes, a lot of people are going to get destroyed in the markets longer term. That seems to me to be inevitable. But does that really mean we should expect our media and gov't to send us into an all-out panic?

So what you're saying is that we should all lie all the time so the maximum number of people get ****ed?

Thank you for that opinion, but no.

Falcon,

No ... people need to prepare. That is, unless one actually believes that this plane will return to level flight (I don't believe).

Also, people aren't just getting destroyed in the markets. They are getting destroyed in real life.

OK, so you countenance fraud.

Thanks for playing, go find somewhere else to run that as a "solution"; advocating lawless behavior is against the TOS here. You can contact me privately when you're prepared to stop advocating felonies and I will turn your account back on.

So, Falcon, by ignoring the potential of gloom and doom (reality) we can avoid that outcome axiomatically? How bout the truth and letting the chips fall where they may. Gravity wins out either way.

I just read on CR that 13.2% of all mortgages are either delinquent or in foreclosure. How much longer can banks continue this ruse? Pile these losses on top of commercial and credit card losses and I would not be surprised if banks, in aggregate, have over 10% of their deposits in the hole. And this is without taking leverage into account. If banks have loaned out many times their deposit base, then the figure is much worse.

I'm not sure why the term delinquent or in foreclosure is used instead of just delinquent. Are there mortgages in foreclosure that aren't delinquent?

Couple of questions:

1. Who on this board believes that government cares about the truth or our interest?
2. Who on this board believes that the average CEO cares about the truth or our interest?
3. Who on this board believes that media cares about the truth or our interest?

Maybe I'm the odd duck, but I gave up on government about 20 years ago, corporate CEOs about 10 years ago and media, well, I don't even own a a TV any more. Nuff said?

As I read more and more of the history of financial markets, none of this is really new. If you don't believe me, read Kindleberger's Manias, Panics and Crashes. Read Bonner and Rajiva's Mobs, Messiahs and Markets. It's not new. It's not different this time. To read these books is to understand that government and the corporate kelptocracy ALWAYS act in their best interest, not yours. Not mine. A lapdog media isn't exactly a new phenomena either.

The pigmen need bagholders this time just as they always have. What has occurred to me over the last leg of this rally is that they're going to get their bagholders. It's as inevitable as the sun rising in the east tomorrow. I won't be one of them. I hope none of you will be either. When the trend shifts for good, there will be plenty of time to get on the short train. I will do so then. Until then, I will watch with amusement. I've seen this movie before. I know how it ends.

And it's not like Komatsu is stealing all Cat's business away:

Komatsu 1st quarter report - July 28, 2009:
(Amounts are rounded to the nearest million yen)
Net sales 2008: 606,832
Net sales 2009: 320,428
Change: -47.2%

Net income attributable to Komatsu Ltd. 2008: 57,731
Net income attributable to Komatsu Ltd. 2009: 4,763
Change: -91.7%

In the construction, mining and utility equipment business, the environment for Komatsu has changed drastically since the second half period of the previous fiscal year, causing demand to nose-dive worldwide.

Their outlook for 2010 isn't good at all either (a change of -24% in sales).

With respect to the construction, mining and utility equipment business, there are some signs of recovery in demand in some limited regions, such as China, where large-scale public works began to emerge thanks to the economic stimulus package. Nevertheless, demand is nose-diving more than anticipated in Japan and the United States, while that in Europe, the Middle East and some other regions remains uncertain.

But nobody cares. Stock market keeps on rallying. How long can this go on? I'm in awe.

Speaking of Komatsu...(again...disclosure...I work for the North American subsidiary of a large Japanese import export company).. we regularly get inviations to buy goods at discounted prices (friends and family day) at retailers we supply good to. Normaly it is the like of Brooks Brothers or Joseph A Banks as we bring in most of their fabric or garments into the US. Occassionally we will get it from some food distributor....But recently we were awarded disounts of Komatsu products. HUH...WTF??? What the hell am I gonna do with a back hoe??? A dirt mover or Bull dozer. I know things are tough...but seriously!!!!

My opinion only, fostered by drowning in bitter angst over the injustice of it all and jaded (heh) by all things green.

I am convinced that it will go on indefinitely.
I can't understand it, because I agree 100% with our illustrious host. The math does not lie. But somehow math has been bypassed it seems.

Remember this story?

February 11 2009 — President Barack Obama, campaigning to cast his economic plan in terms of real jobs and families, said Wednesday that machinery giant Caterpillar Inc. plans to rehire some of its laid-off workers if Congress approves a sweeping stimulus bill.

Obama’s mention of Caterpillar also came just one day before he was heading to Peoria, Ill., to visit the company’s workers and keep pushing his plan. The heavy-equipment maker has announced more than 20,000 job cuts, as shrinking credit and construction demands hurt orders for tractors and other machines.

Said Obama: “Today, the chairman and CEO of Caterpillar said that if the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan passes, his company would be able to rehire some of those employees.” He did not specify to whom the company chairman and CEO, Jim Owens, made such a pledge.
