Consumer electronics is one of the most saturated areas of the bubble economy. It was and is due for major, prolonged retracement. And margins are very very tight on almost everything in BBY. If I were BBY mgmt, I'd start looking to expand into other product areas. It may sound crazy but I think bringing solar panels, home generators etc. into the stores may help. I also think they should offer used video games/dvd's/blu-rays etc.

They won't and can't offer used media Mayor - it would destroy their media business, and that's a BIG part of their store footage. ****, the store around here probably has 25-30% of their space dedicated to that. Trash those sales (any worse than they already are) and you're in deep ****.

Hey, Obama hasn't bought Me a new flat-screen with Somebody Else's Money Yet! I'm missed all of His Leno appearances, Bernanke on 60 Minutes; and that Geithner (bankrupted) Town Hall. I'm not so sure Gen. I think the demand for the 'newest' game or movie will still be strong enough to allow them to offer older titles on the cheap. It's either that or let GameStop earnings ramp up while they suffer. Perhaps they can offer a kickback to the studios to placate them (and therefore make money multiple times on the same dvd - much the way banks do with a house).

i bought a 42" flat screen lcd from target last weekend for $639. I looked at the best buy insert and saw nothing comprable. the consumer is alive where the deals are.... but everything is reduced so much that profits are much more difficult to achieve. i can honeslty say i've bought more things in the last 12 months than I have in my entire life.... but im spending much less at the same time, so it works for me! EDIT: by the way, the target people said they had people coming from all over the place to get that TV deal, they had no more after i purchased the last one of the day. ---------- Karl, can I change my screen name please? They just put in a brand new Best buy 10 minutes down the road from me. Now, There's one in King of Prussia. A new store/shopping center 15 minutes up the road from it in Sanatoga. 15 minutes up the road..Pottstown. 15 minutes up the road a new (not open yet )store in East Reading. 15 minutes up the road in West Reading. Who the hell is buying all the electronics? The new shopping centers all have the Best Buys paired with Petco and 5 below. Forgive me but, I didn't even know what the hell 5 below was ... I guess everything "ain't a dollar no more" I see this around here to the point of Nausea. There are 2 Giant Foods withing 10 minutes of each other with a new one going in 5 minutes down the road from me in yet another new shopping center (just broke ground). There are 2 Walmarts (one a Super Walmart) within 10 minutes of each other. Oh yeah!........3 targets I guess it's all clear......till it's not. Last modified:

JZ, Home depot is notorious for canibalizing themsevlves. i've got three within 6 miles of me. i had a family memeber who worked there who got laid off becasue they have virturally no need for employees because the stores are competing against each other!

We already had the CfC for electronics program: it was called the "Digital Transition" and put $40 to $80 into every household that wanted it to upgrade their electronics. I imagine that was a really nice one-time shot in the arm for BBY. ---------- Photoguy was an optimist. In Soviet Russia, the banks are run by the politicians.

Regarding media, I'm phreaking astounded that people shell out $10-20 per title for a personal copy of every crappy movie ever made. The profit on those DVD's must be gigantic.

I do think there is some pent up demand for computers as a lot of people have been avoiding buying one for years because of Vista. However the consumer credit contraction can't be good for this industry, even with Circuit City gone.

Consumers don't seem to mind Vista. It's the corporate users who said "**** you" to that. Win7 isn't bad but how it differs from Vista is pretty tough to discern. The big potential "**** you" is that the heavy-duty compatibility modes are only available on the high-end Win7 products and that's likely to be trouble, as I've run into several piece of software that will NOT run without one of those modes enabled. ---------- "The monetary base in ALL modern monetary systems is the sum of unencumbered assets against which one is both WILLING AND ABLE to borrow." - Me

I need a new home desktop, and have to decide between waiting for 7 or getting the XP downgrade while it is still available. I'm perfectly happy with XP and it will run all of my software. I may until after the big correction I think is coming soon and hope to catch Dell when they are really desperate.

Now when it comes to Best Buy and competitors I would like to mention that they have to compete with more than other stores. Amazon, Newegg, etc... are all perfectly good options for consumers. I have many relatives that prefer purchasing online instead of dealing with the crowds at BestBuy during the Holiday season.

Quote:With this coming in the "back to school" quarter it is a screaming warning on the upcoming holiday season Not necessiarily. A lot of people, self included, are not spending now becasue they are saving for the upcoming holiday season. I think it also depends on the location. There is a Best Buy / Costco / Toys R Us a couple blocks from me, and you still cant get a parking spot. I still get ****ed at the traffic jam it causes on the weekends. Quote:Consumer electronics is one of the most saturated areas of the bubble economy. J6P, or maybe more specifically, J6P Jr, doesnt think so. Every kid has a phone, and 6 months later wants a new one. Same with some co-workers for crying out loud. Video games, like Rock Band and the new Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, are HUGE. iPods, netbooks, all these things are the electronic american idol equivalent for this country. You gotta think low income here folks. These are the treats, like black people and their expensive clothes. These are people that dont have ****, sometimes not even a car. But they will always have the latest gadget, CD, phone, or shirt. It's their (only) nirvana. ---------- I don't make the bombs we build, I make the bombs we build better...

J1k If you have some Tech savy why not buy the parts and assemble it yourself for a third of the cost? You could order from NewEgg and make a quad core monster and get Windows 7. My roomate has a quad core monster and he assembled it all last year for $800. If you can't assemble it yourself I am sure you know someone who could help. If all you want to do is browse the internet and do some work in word why not get a netbook instead? I plan on buying a netbook and setting it up to duel boot Windows XP and Ubuntu.
