Many of us have always speculated that the info from our government were skewed... Where is the line between "freedom of speech" and fraud??? Im not trying to create a tin-foil thread but it does seem that the system is 'gamed' for the pigmen... What the difference between fraud and announcing numbers (like the CPI) only to be revised correctly a short time later??? I dont see how anyone can have confidence in our economy... Between our mystical non-inflation CPI and our BLS birth/death models, we have a sound economy based on a strong dollar policy... UGH...

Yep, without doubt a cooked number in my book, doesn't everyone involved in the markets have kind of an itch they can't scratch when they see stuff like that. The world is showing what they think of the fed and its methods via the dollar. Its not just about rates, its about accountability. When all is said and done, I hope you guys have yourselves a good time in the town square with some tar and feathers, or you could just get on with it now and help us all out. ---------- When does Keanu get here?

I'm not normally much for the belief that things are just plain cooked, but anyone who believes that energy prices have FALLEN in the last month has bought none of it. ---------- "The monetary base in ALL modern monetary systems is the sum of unencumbered assets against which one is both WILLING AND ABLE to borrow." - Me

With all the info available from Karl's Analysis to the games the Fed is playing we can only assume that things are a lot worse than can be imagined. Don't want to be too bearish but I think we are in for one hell of a ride and I don't think its too far away. The tell for me was when GWB made his speech today. Now that has been how many days in a row he has stated that the economy is going to be fine??? MSM is finally getting it and J6P is getting it too!!!!!

Re: the President's speech. Even CNBC had a skeptical lead-in. About 30 minutes prior to the speech, you get this quote: "We're waiting for the President to give his speech at the Economic Club of New York, where he's expected to say that the economy isn't in recession, even though 70% of economists say we are."

Can't wait for the numbers next month. Diesel at the station near me was at 3.88 this morning, now 4.12/gallon. Reg. Unleaded up from 3.29 to 3.42. No doubt the numbers were cooked to give them room to cut/bail imho. Sickening really.

i know plenty of people who bought their houses under "subprime" category. They are just as honest, hardworking, have great jobs as any other people.

For March, the reporting date was Tue the 11th. If gas was higher on Tuesday, which it was for me, look out next month. Even if gasoline moderates from here, March will come in hot. Not many retailers had sales this week, so expect core to come in a little hot as well. Sometimes a sale like Pres. Day or Val. Day will mess things up a bit since they can fall mid-month and they are slightly variable year to year. Spring is sometimes hard because of the holiday season (Easter etc), there can be a lot of volatility in the retail numbers.

This CPI numbers reminds me of Argentina and their manipulation of the inflation numbers. Does anybody here at forum stabilization of gas prices in month of February? Look this article: "Gas prices swelled nearly 16 cents over the past two weeks, rising to a national average of $3.10, a survey said Sunday." http://money.cnn.com/2008/02/24/news/eco....

I live in Minnesota, and I can tell you EXACTLY why our food prices are going up so fast: ETHANOL. No joke. When you take some huge percentage of our corn crop and burn it for fuel (by law, at least up here in Minnesota), then you end-up with a chain-reaction. Chickens are fed (mostly) corn. Dairy cows feed on corn (wellll... they eat a lot of it, let's put it that way.) Pig feed is (again, a large percentage) corn. Corn, historically, has been cheap to grow, and can be grown in most soil-types. It is what allows most livestock to be fed cheaply, and allows milk (and therefore butter, yogurt, cheese... etc) to historically have been so cheap. Take the main ingredient of ALL OF THIS STUFF and burn it for fuel, without allowing time for the changes in aggregate supply, and food prices MUST rise. No real way around it. I know the ticker only briefly touched on food prices, but the Ethanol concept is going to impact your food prices a whole lot worse than you think, as time rolls forward. Chicks are now $4 each (!) right out of the coop, and that's if you drive to the farm and pay the farmer in cash. Eggs up too, and milk... and this is all stuff that we have here in our own back-yard, for the most part. It's ethanol. That's the reason. Nobody wants to say it, but it's true. ---------- Mliu wrote.....I told my wife... that the depression is comming so I don't want to go to work anymore....

Just curious, is the CPI energy price component "seasonally adjusted"? Not that they aren't lying, just that they might not be lying as much as I think.

Special, Not adjusted. The money quote from BLS: "The transportation index decreased 0.7 percent in February. The index for gasoline declined 2.0 percent, accounting for about 95 percent of the overall transportation decrease." Gas prices are measured at the beginning of the month, not the end. You have to wait for next month for higher gas prices. This is the monstrous number that lowered the entire index. Read it here: http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cpi..... About three paragraphs after the table. ---------- Correction in a bull market: Healthy Correction in a bear market: Very Scary Last modified:

So, unless the dollar seriously recovers we can expect all of that recent increase to factor into the next two CPIs?

In all fairness, the gas prices did go down somewhat in February, but it seems that they are 'breaking out' of the bullish flag in March! http://gasbuddy.com/gb_retail_price_char.... We are a little luckier in TX, it seems... ---------- The following statement is true. The preceding statement was false.

I saw 4.29 diesel here in Atlanta Friday. That worries me more than gasoline costs. We get so much of our supplies and food via 18-wheeler.

Deputy BoE Governor's comments to a SWF fund conference in London. Apologies if not correct thread but referred to on Friday's video: I missed this amidst all the other things going on but it probably explains the counter-trend move in cable and explosion in Eur/Gbp. Health warning - this guy has been a prick on many occasions in the past and I suspect the Governor will be kicking his ass on Monday - BoE doesn't like to advertise its gbp policy. http://www.iii.co.uk/news/?type=reutersn.... ---------- Congratulations [insert your country] Idol (and everyone who watches it), you succeeded in making everything suck.
