Liddy called the bonuses "retention". Can the aholes take them and resign? That would be fuel on the fire.

power to the people. ring fence every major AIG building with pitchforks. make 'em file because they can't get to the computer terminals to conduct business. what's barry gonna do, sick the national guard on the unemployed taxpayers trying to take back their own property?

civil nonviolence is such a wonderful thing. I'd prefer that to sledgehammer meets BMW, which is the obvious next step

Perfect storm Cuommo said he has identified 12 people who are leaving and received million dollar bonuses.

AIG is going to need more guards.

maybe we should properly incent the AIG traders to wind down all these trades by giving them a 1 time only, 2009 tax cut. if you close out the positions in 2009, you don't pay tax on your income.

The anger out there regarding the AIG bailouts is real. More pure indignation and anger than what was felt when the housing bailout plan was floated - the one that Santelli spoke on.

I barely heard anyone outside of the trading community speak about Santelli, but the AIG bonus issue is something I hear from people who probably never heard of the company 6 months ago.

Interesting bits: http://www.antique-swords.net/antique-sw....

Seppuku was committed with a tantō (Japanese word for dagger). After the disgraced samurai stabbed himself in the abdomen, his ceremonial assistant would decapitate him with a katana.

2 ways to get the bonuses back - 1) have congress institute a one time only tax of 90% on bonuses over $250,000 paid during 2009 (never a good policy to encourage the government to tax - but it will get the bonuses back in the taxpayer's hands); and/or 2) change your insurance carrier so you are not doing business with AIG directly or indirectly (hard to do and will result in a huge loss for the taxpayer - but we already lost that investment)

best way to get them back is to put the whole company into runoff and hope for the best. the bonus recipients can wait until the runoff is almost complete. CDS are 5 years usually. they can wait 60 months.

and here's an interesting thought: what would the US be saying if the black hole was a french or german insurer? would we be trying to collect every dime? settling for 95 cents on the dollar for these "in the money" contracts? would we thumb the germans and tell them to take it? would we tell the french to BK their crown jewel? would the french be throwing cobblestones?

Perhaps a more functional remedy would be to tell those who aren't retained yet received "retention bonuses" to return the $$ or face criminal charges for fraud.

(Better than Schumer making tax code on the fly, and more practical than throwing down, JMO.)

christ Aaron -- that's an image I just didn't need...

I guess I was wrong all these years -- I thought proper seppuku was to attempt to cut a complete circle in your abdomen and this was a measure of how much honor you "regained."

Regardless, I'm glad to see some semblance of pitchfork honing, it's about damned time but maybe there is hope...

I'm not so ****ed at the AIG guys. You get what you can get. It is shameful but I understand it. Turbo is the guy I'm ****ed at. Charlie Gasparino was right about this. He was either complicit or incompetent. He's gotta go.

Karl, I doubt these AIG guys will have to take your advice on "Seppuku" (even though I would help you pay for the knife).

from what I can gather by not paying attention too closely:
geithner is guilty as sin and should be burned at the stake
Dodd is equally guilty as sin should be pressed with rocks
bernanke should be driven from office by a mob with pitchforks
frank is an idiot (but hasn't done anything deliberately wrong)
obama is the worst judge of character since Ulysses S Grant
McCain is useless
Schumer is a blowhard who who loves to **** people off...he should tell eithner to stand down "as a disgrace to the office"
and I hate to say this, but I actually was impressed by Rangel for the first time in my life today. He said the tax code should not a weapon / slippery slope argument.
AIG is a tar baby: and she's puckering up again.
however:
we may not have any more bailouts since this fiasco, so maybe we should look on the bright side of this ****storm...we might not fund any more.

uh Berkley, if it's as big and as convoluted as some have supposed - then, AIG is enough to send us over the cliff - we won't need any more bailouts to finish us off.

I'm still all for draining the swamp and seeing what's what anyway.

not the way I see it. The reson AIG was drained of funds was to post collateral in the amount they were underwater on the contracts. should be a minimal disruption when they sink beneath the waves.
besides, everyone except the idiots running money markets must have quantified their exposure and done something about it by now.
let's be honest here, AIG hired armed guards at their HQ. GS, BAC and Duetsche must have made contingency plans by now.
