US commercial paper outstanding falls in week-Fed

NEW YORK, Dec 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. commercial paper market contracted, and the closely watched asset-backed sector also shrank and has contracted by about one third since August, Federal Reserve data showed on Thursday.

For the week ended Dec. 5, the size of the U.S. commercial paper market, a vital source of short-term funding for daily operations at many companies, fell by $10.2 billion to $1.844 trillion, from $1.854 trillion the previous week.

Asset-backed commercial paper outstanding fell for the 17th straight week, down by $23.0 billion. U.S. asset-backed commercial paper outstanding fell to $801.2 billion in the latest week from $824.3 billion the previous week. That left the U.S. asset backed commercial paper market's size the smallest since the fall of 2005.
