Went to Turners to look at shotguns with my buddy (who in light of things decides he needs a home defense weapon - his first). Remington distributor here in socal is apparently completely out of 870 shotguns (both long and short barrel). Sales guys at Turners says there has been an absolute run on home defensive type weapons (as opposed to hunting weapons) and ammunition. Also mentioned something about safes selling well.

The fleamarkets in the mountains here sure aren't. If I saw one, I saw a hundred this weekend. Prices start at $150 for a single-shot .410

I could have had a nice double barreled 12 guage for $300. Remington pumps are around $450 asking.

I don't know what I'm waiting for.

Question: I want to get a handgun, or two, for self defense (is there any other purpose?). I don't want anything fancy. My priorities are in this order: reliable, small, inexpensive, inexpensive ammo, lower noise. This is isn't going to be my only firearm. This will be the one I carry if I leave the compound.

Can you give me some recommendations. I'd really like a .22 but I don't trust the lethality in a gunfight. I want to practice a lot and don't want to annoy my neighbors too much. I have 800 feet from the nearest neighbor. Perhaps a .22 is a good choice. Use low powered ammo for practice but more powerful zingers for real-world use.

Get a glock 19. Everything you ask for, except "low noise" handgun, there isn't one. You can practice with 115gr 9mm, and for protection, use at least 124gr +p Hollowpoint of your choice, I like Speer Golddot and Federal HST. You can also buy .22 conversion for Glock19 for even cheaper ammo, and great practice tool for beginner.

Get a 357 / 38 ruger sp101, hammerless if you like. It's a substantial gun that is well made and ultra-reliable. Load it. Point and shoot. That's it.

http://www.gunweek.com/2001/feature0101.....

The 357 will handle 38 round, which are mild to shoot and certainly deadly. The 357, of course, will sting a bit if you hit center mass.

Boz-try a crossbow. you can shoot em all day and doesn't **** anyone off. You be surprised how lethal they can be. even the small, 80 lbs one-handed variety are tons of fun. Also much easier on the ears when discharged, especially in the house. put a laser sight on it if you want good accuracy.

Nighttowl,

"This will be the one I carry if I leave the compound."

It'll be pretty freaking weird walking around with a crossbow.

BOZ - revolver for 100% reliability. I would avoid the .22, it's really a squirrel killer rather than a man stopper. For just practice and stopping power, I'd go with a 9mm - cheap rounds / reasonably stopping power. I am hearing good things about the 1911's chambered for 9mm. If you want a polymer frame gun (for light weight and "tactical look") try the HK P2000 or USP series - the safety is preferable over a glock if you're not planning to wear it in a holster.

Honestly, SHOOT before you buy - each shooter has different preferences.

+1 on the revolver as a defensive handgun Smith and Wesson of course makes some very nice revolvers. You can easily look to see if it is loaded and the operation is as simple as it can get, .38 caliber is what I have and is a good defensive load.

I also like the revolver because there are no safeties other than the heavy trigger pull. You can carry it loaded and know you are ready to go. A model 1911 that is locked and ****ed is not something I personally would want to carry around.

I also have a Springfield XD 45, which is a great weapon. It is not a carry gun, more of a all hell breaks loose kind of gun.

Go to the range and get some practice don't worry about the noise of handgun, when people are in a situation where they have to shoot they honestly don't here the shots and don't know how many times they pulled the trigger.

Nightowl, I hope you're trolling. That's crazy-talk. In self-defense you're not looking for lethality, you're looking to stop an unlawful and immediate lethal threat against you or your family. A crossbow may indeed cause someone to die, but by bleeding out, and he may do a LOT of damage before dying. Frankly i'd prefer a baseball bat to a Crossbow, and good locks and a dog to either.

(Pistol advice at bottom)

Boz, in all sincerity, your best self-defense is to buy XLF puts and with those, spend to live in a nice neighborhood. Avoid dangerous situations and people.

800 feet is not far away if you're a beginner. Maybe a range and competent instruction is a good idea. Your risk from practicing may higher than some never-will-materialize bad guy.

A rifle or a shotgun is better than a handgun. (If things get so bad you actually LIVE IN A COMPOUND you'll probably be perfectly able to take your long guns with you. I was in Central America recently and the bodyguards had auto shotguns and carbines in the car. These guys know what they're doing)

Get a Glock and .22 kit for it for practice, or a Kimber .45 and a .22 kit for it. Practice with a .22 that has the same controls (safety, trigger) as your centerfire defense gun. The Ruger 22/45 is designed to be a trainer for the .45

Revolver will give you better point and shoot success..... given your limited firearms back round.(IMHO) They're quite accurate a longer distances as well. Granted...it depends on how much your willing to practice but I always find a revolver easier to just pick up and hit the paper.
Don't go .22 Get .40. .45. or .357 9mm will give you a tremendous choice of ammo.....too confusing and a tendency to over penetrate...

I think that if my focus was on "home protection" get the Mossberg at $250..

Not to many worries of over penetration but with up to 3 1/2 in magnum.... HUGE stopping power

I picked up some more Iron this past weekend.....

Wife not too happy....... The bathroom needs to be remodeled hehe

For shotgun loads, use #1 buck. Great penetration in gel tests, very little penetration through walls. #00 buck will go through wallboard. Smaller loads are less likely to damage critical organs/vessels.

For handguns, I concur on a revolver for inexperienced shooters. I also think a .22 is fine and a good choice for beginners. "Stopping power" gets may too much play because it sounds cool. With a .22, you are far more likely (especially for a beginner) to actually hit the target instead of lurching around anticipating the kick and thunder of a .45.

Double-tap to be sure! Put two .22 slugs through the same hole and most thugs will at least pause long enough for you to re-aim. S&W 617 is a nice ten-shot .22 revolver.

Thanks for the advice guys.

The noise doesn't bother me, but it might bother the neighbors. I'd prefer to keep a low profile in general.

I will get competent instruction. I'm surrounded by gun pros. The other day my neighbor was shooting his musket (musket and bow and arrow season opens early here). He shoots the deer in his back yard. Of course, I've only heard 5 or 6 shots at a time. If I'm practicing I'll be shooting continuously for hours and that might get annoying.

No way, I would want to own a .22 for self defense. For target and practice shooting they are great. If you are new to shooting picking up a .22 to practice with that is a great idea. I own a browning .22 for just this purpose.

In a threat situation you aren't going to be making highly accurate head shots in a 1 inch ring. You are going to pointing and blasting at someones chest, you could put a dozen .22 rounds into someone and they could still end up killing you.

Get a .22 rifle and handgun for practice. For a self-defense handgun that meets your criteria, go 9mm... the ammo is relatively inexpensive, and you won't run out after 5 or 6 shots if the balloon goes up.

+1 on the Mossies from Big 5... I bought one a few years ago. Inexpensive, reliable, good capacity... you can't ask for more, and there are all sorts of goodies you can get for it if you want.
