http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/y.... "The nation's second-largest consumer electronics retailer, behind Best Buy Co., plans to open 50 to 60 stores in the coming months in a new, smaller format that it calls the City. They'll be staffed with Generation Y employees carrying computer tablets to look up stats on any product in the company. Shelves have been cleared of merchandise with ho-hum sales to focus on blockbuster sellers. Computers, cameras and video games are all hooked up and ready for hands-on testing. The staff recites such mottoes as "Keep it real" and holds twice-daily rituals of "shameless self-recognition." Wow, that sounds like a winning business model I want in on. I really want to go to a store with a ****ty selection so some clueless teenage dickbag can sell me a TV while "keeping it real." Who comes up with this ****?

Hell, they had to do something. I go there every month or so and can't believe the wasted space/broken floor models/lackadaisical staff. Really a crummy store.

What do you expect from a store that fires its best and most senior performing sales staff and then attempts to "rehire" them back and pay them 20% less. If I can't find something on CraigsList or eBay THEN I go to Best Buy. Otherwise, I'll leave Circuit City for the Sheeple to shop there. Besides, CC, does have an especially horrid selection. I hope they lose their ass.

I think they have Apple Store envy. Except they're clueless. They think that hiring "slackers" like on TV with lots of demos is going to work. In reality, Apple Stores are heavily staffed, and the "slackers" are actually pretty smart and competent most of the time. The reason is that smart and competent young people (e.g. doing a summer job or something before their real job) don't feel embarrassed to work for Apple like they would for Circuit City. ---------- USA 2008: crony capitalism dressed up in Ayn Rand's trampsuit

Holy frickin' crap. This story is hilarious (even without snoopifying it). Every elderly person should apply to be a salesperson there. The company has already professed a preference for hiring a particular age group (Generation Y). Let the lawsuits fly! They're down 5% today, probably just on people shorting them for this hilarious press release.

They need to liquidate while they can and give the money back to the shareholders. This is not in keeping with their fiduciary duty.

Circuit City sucks, plain and simple. I will not be sad to see them go. Between them and CompUSA, I find it astounding that no one can seem to get electronics right in the market (with the exception of Apple, though it's slightly different.) Best Buy is okay, but I find them infuriating to deal with. Buying a TV just shouldn't be so ******n difficult. "Keep it real"? Jesus, I used to work in advertising and if I had proposed anything remotely similar, I'd have been fired on the spot or ridiculed until I left. Smells like desperation to me. Keeping it real, yo! Just keep giving me those closeout discounts as CC goes out of business. Hope Mr. GenY guy at least gets a commission on the sale - base pay is probably min wage. OTOH, I was in a Radio Shack recently and the staff was incredibly helpful - they must have changed the comp with some incentives. And can't beat the price, although quality is somewhat suspect.. ---------- Short-Term Capital Mismanagement - "When genius was never there to begin with!"
